Scapa Flow plays host to a fascinating range of activities - from exploring scuttled wrecks to appreciating some of the finest arts and crafts. • Lyness Interpretation Centre, Lyness, Hoy - no trip is complete without a visit to this fascinating centre dedicated to telling Orkney's story during both World Wars.
• Orkney Wireless Museum, Kirkwall, Mainland - situated close to Kirkwall Harbour, this little gem of a museum features major displays of Wartime communications plus early domestic radio in Orkney. • The Italian Chapel, Lamb Holm - built by Italian POWs during the construction of the Churchill barriers in WWll. Constructed around Nissen huts, it has an astonishing and beautifully crafted interior - not to be missed.
• The Orkneyinga Saga Centre, Orphir, Mainland - adjacent to the remains of a Viking drinking hall and Scotland's only circular mediaeval church, this interpretation centre houses a display and audio/visual presentation outlining Orkney's famous Norse heritage.
• Stromness Museum, Stromness, Mainland - run by the Orkney Natural History Society, this lovely museum houses many displays, including the German Fleet in Scapa Flow and the Hudson's Bay Company's strong Orkney links.
• Kitchener Memorial, Birsay, Mainland - A monument to Lord Kitchener who lost his life amongst many others when HMS Hampshire sank of the headland in 1916. • You might like to see craftsmen who make Orkney's distinctive strawback 'Orkney Chair'. Why not visit to Robert Towers who works just outside of Kirkwall near Scapa, or Scapa Crafts, in Kirkwall.
